Taxes. Everyone pays them. No one likes them. Right? 

I just finished reading THIS article about how our state plans to change the way that farmers are taxed on the land that they own. 

The article states "Kansas farmers worry new legislation could drive them out of business. A bill introduced in the state Senate last week aims to increase property taxes for agricultural land.

Under the Kansas Constitution, agricultural property is valued and taxed based on the productivity/income of the land"

Basically, taxes now take into account the affect that mother nature, commodity prices, and other uncontrollable factors can have on agricultural land. The article is well written and highlights concerns that producers face if this legislation passes. 

What really gets me is the insane number of comments from people who have no idea what they are talking about. 

One commenter said something along the lines of "when the prices of goods go up 400% everyone will start to grow their own food instead". 

I personally would love to see just how many people could actually grow their own food. 

Having a small herb and veggie garden on you balcony is a whole lot different than growing all the veggies, proteins, and dairy that you need to survive long term. 

Just wait until you get to see all the input costs of raising a dairy cow, beef cow, soybeans, wheat (or any grain) plus all the vegetables that you want. And they try and process it all yourself, or pay the processor and see how you like that bill. And I expect you to purchase some property to keep your new livestock, because you sure can't keep it on your balcony or in your living room. And this property is going to be highly taxed. Oh and good luck with your free range chickens living in the city. 

It makes me laugh to think about and yet thoroughly frustrated that there are still people who do not understand how much of an impact the agricultural sector makes on their lives every single day. Every time you eat, or get dressed, or drive your car, or get on the bus, or walk in your leather shoes, or drink you protein shake... you should Thank A Farmer.
